Borrow some dirty pennies from your piggy bank for this interesting experiment!
Materials Needed
- Medium size cup or bowl
- white vinegar
- water
- salt
- spoon
- paper towels
- 3 dirty pennies
- tablespoon
Procedures
- Measure 1 tablespoon of salt in a medium-size cup or bowl.
- Measure 4 tablespoons of vinegar into the cup/bowl with the salt.
- Mix the solution of salt and vinegar with spoon.
- Drop in 3 pennies. Stir for 2 minutes.
- Watch what happens!
- Take out your pennies and wash them off. Then dry them with a paper towel.
- Record your observations and keep your pennies for evidence!
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
Vinegar is a chemical called acetic acid. Salt is the chemical sodium chloride. When these two chemicals mix, they react to form a small amount of a new chemical called hydro-chloric acid. This acid has the ability to shine your copper pennies instantly!
