Borrow some dirty pennies from your piggy bank for this interesting experiment!


Materials Needed
  • Medium size cup or bowl
  • white vinegar
  • water
  • salt
  • spoon
  • paper towels
  • 3 dirty pennies
  • tablespoon

Procedures
  1. Measure 1 tablespoon of salt in a medium-size cup or bowl.
  2. Measure 4 tablespoons of vinegar into the cup/bowl with the salt.
  3. Mix the solution of salt and vinegar with spoon.
  4. Drop in 3 pennies. Stir for 2 minutes.
  5. Watch what happens!
  6. Take out your pennies and wash them off. Then dry them with a paper towel.
  7. Record your observations and keep your pennies for evidence!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Vinegar is a chemical called acetic acid. Salt is the chemical sodium chloride. When these two chemicals mix, they react to form a small amount of a new chemical called hydro-chloric acid. This acid has the ability to shine your copper pennies instantly!
